Mandawa

|
A hamlet-dhani founded by Mandu Jat, later discovered and developed by Shekhawat Bhoj Ji Ka Rajput has evolved with time into one of the most picturesque place with pompous palaces. No wonder that it is famed as the 'open art gallery" of Rajasthnan because of the fascinating frescoes that adorn the walls of the fortress-havelis. The mesmerizing murals narrate a story while they speak volumes about the culture and history of the land. Some of the must-watch Mansions- Havelis include:
Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli has religious paintings that show sanctity of animals too as Gods are depicted with their pet/ride. Lord Shiva is along with his Nandi-bull and Lord Indra sits elegant on his elephant.

Gulab Rai Ladia Haveli is as exotic as it is eroctic. The blue washes on the wall show scenes that would have aroused censorship as well in twentieth century. The murals stand witness to the 'then and now' of the norms of the society.
Murmuria Haveli is a juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary, more so because its painter was one of the last working artists in 1930s-Balu Ram. Lord Krishna with his cows in an English courtyard, speeding train with a crow racing with its steam engine, a young Nehru (First Prime Minister of free India) flamboyantly on a horseback with a fluttering flag are just some of the contradictory conceptions of the artist.
Mandawa Fort built by Thakur Nawal Singh in 1755 AD stands today as an exceptionally luxurious heritage hotel. The fort walls are frescoed with finesse depicting Lord Krishna. The unique adition to paintings is the glimmering mirror work and a collection of aniques in the palace.
